I’ve just finished “The Well Of Ascension” by Brandon Sanderson and I really enjoyed it!
5 Stars!
We follow our same heroine from The Final Empire, Vin as she tries to make sense of the problems facing the residents of her city, Luthadel. The old band of characters from The Final Empire are present, as well as Vin. I enjoyed all of our characters if I’m being honest. Everyone had something different to offer the plot, which kept me intrigued.

Reading Rivalry - Madness Takes Its Toll - some of the characters are mad/crazy in the plot of “The Well Of Ascension.”

“I belong with those who love me,” Vin said.
Zane shook his head. “We don’t belong with them, Vin. We don’t belong in their world. We belong here, in the mists.”
Vin is unsure for a lot of this book. She doesn’t know who she can truly rely on or trust. She feels on her own. Zane is actually Elend’s, Vin’s fiancé, and latterly her husband’s unknown brother, through their evil father! Can she trust Zane or does he betray her? I’ll let you read for yourself, but it’s good.
The mists are a big plot point of “The Well Of Ascension.” Vin and therefore, we don’t know just what the mists are. Are they truly alive? And if they are, what will they do?
A lot of this book had me thinking one thing and then totally changing my mind in the next few pages. I believe this is to show how scatterbrained Vin must have felt. She only wants to do what’s best for those she loves.
“Elend closed the book and turned toward her, smiling. Vin searched those soft eyes, delving for hints of the horror she had seen before. The disgust, the terror, the shock.
He knew her for a monster. How could he smile at her so kindly?”
Vin doesn’t want to scare anyone away. She’s helpless above.
Another character we follow from book 1, Sazed makes some discoveries too! “This one bit of writing—perhaps twenty pages total—could easily keep him busy for months, even years.” Sazed is a Feruchemist, someone with the power to create metalminds to store the power of the metals. Sazed meets another Feruchemist, Tindwyl that he knew when he was younger. He hasn’t seen her in years, however. How does their relationship develop? I’ll let you read for yourself, but I enjoyed it again.
The main point of “The Well Of Ascension,” I believe is the politics. Vin and Elend try to bring the people of Luthadel together, while other Lords, Lord Cett and Elend’s evil father, Straff Venture, try to keep them apart to cause havoc. Also, there is a creature called the “koloss.” They were the Lord Ruler’s servants, if you like. Only he could control them. He was killed at the end of book 1. Can Vin save Elend and the rest of the people of Luthadel, or does the city fall down in front of everyone? Can Vin’s band of revolutionaries save Luthadel and at what cost?
One thing that I didn’t like so much in “The Well Of Ascension” was well, the lack of the Well Of Ascension. It only became significant, I’d say in the last 5th of the book and when our characters were there, although something significant happened, it really wasn’t described in great detail. It kind of left me wanting more…
I did enjoy the romance between Vin and Elend in “The Well Of Ascension.” The romantic parts were few and far between but they were still good! I didn’t expect any romance in this book to be honest, so I’m glad we got some. Also the romance between Sazed and Tindwyl was sweet too.
Overall, I really did enjoy “The Well Of Ascension.” The world wasn’t described too much, because although it’s fantasy, it’s much like our own. The characters are what makes the book stand out the most, I believe. I love character driven stories, as you know if you’ve read my other reviews so this made me happy.
I’m going to read a fall themed book next so stand by for my review of that!
