Pole Position (Pole Position #1) by Rebecca Caffery Review

Hey ForeverBookers,

How are you today? I hope you’re good!

I’ve just finished “Pole Position” by Rebecca J Caffery and I LOVED it!!! It’s an LGBTQ F1 romance and it had me in knots with emotion. Nothing necessarily sad happened apart from one thing that I’ll get to but it was just extremely emotional for me. I really felt for our MMC’s.

“Pole Position” tells the story of Kian Walker and Harper James as they navigate an uneasy work relationship as F1 drivers after Kian’s partner of a few years, Elijah is out due to injury. Kian is almost 10 years older than Harper too. Kian doesn’t want a new partner as he liked working with Elijah. When sparks begin to fly between Kian and Harper can they keep their relationship quiet and for how long? This is the main story of Pole Position but there’s also Kian’s mother in the background who’s dying of dementia, and his sister, Elise who looks after her children too.

I read “Pole Position” for one readathon which was:

Reading Rivalry - Mario Kart - read a book that features racing - I thought this prompt would be hard to fulfil as I didn’t think I’d find a book that I actually enjoyed that was racing based BUT I LOVED Pole Position!

There are lots of sex scenes in Pole Position that I ate up but if you’re not into erotic romance this might not be the book for you. Also, there are high emotions for both our MMCs throughout.

Spoilers below…

“Four years ago, Elise was in the final year of her nursing degree when she found out in the same week that she was pregnant with my niece, Cassie, and that our mum had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Both discoveries changed her, one for the better, the other not so much. She gave up her nursing degree and when Mum started to lose more of her faculties, Elise became her full-time carer.”

This provides a little context before the love  story of “Pole Position” starts. Elise, as I said above is Kian’s twin sister. She’s older than him by a few hours but never lets him forget it. This was cute. Elise doesn’t want to see their mother suffering anymore than Kian does. She gave up her life goals to look after their mum.

“Mum will forget me first because I’m just not around enough. It will kill Elise to be forgotten, and she’s the one who will have to face it every single day. It is truly the cruellest disease.” Parkinson’s/dementia is the cruellest disease, according to Kian.

The real story or the love story, I suppose starts when Elijah, Kian’s driving partner injures himself at the beginning of the story. This is when a replacement is needed. Said replacement is Harper James. I really loved the character dynamics between Kian and Harper. “Pole Position” truly is an enemies to lovers romance in every sense of the trope. Kian absolutely hates Harper up until Harper is ill one night when they’re on tour in a foreign country. Harper calls Kyle and pleads for help. Of course, Kian helps Harper.

“Still doesn’t answer the question of why you’re calling me,’ I say.

      ‘Please, just help me.’

Why am I such a pushover? I hate that I’m so close to caving.

‘Isn’t there someone else you could have called? Like Johannes, or if you’re unwell the team doctor?’

‘I can’t. It’s so early and you’re always awake.’ Oh, so I’m just the convenient call brilliant.”

Kian doesn’t want to be the “convenient call,” but I believe he’s glad that he was who Harper called in the end. From this point on throughout the novel we get a lot of love scenes as Kian and Harper get to know each other, body and soul. There are questions, of course and insecurities for both our MMCs. Being gay is quite new to Kian and Harper hasn’t ever had a full on relationship before, just “fuck buddies.”

I read “Pole Position” so quickly. It took me three days, I loved it soooooooo much! I think my favourite character was Kian because I feel we got a full picture of him. We got most of Harper but I don’t feel like we got all of him. The novel is told from both our MMC’s perspectives, but Kian just stood out to me more.

I can’t wait to read the sequel that tells of another gay relationship. This time for Johannes, one of Harper’s friends. I’m giving “Pole Position” 5 Stars because it was everything I love in a good book!

I’m going to read “House of Sky and Breath” by Sarah J Maas next so I’m a step closer to being ready for ACOTAR #6 in September!

Hey ForeverBookers,   I’m back! I’ve finished another book!  “ Heartless”   by Elsie Silver was AMAZING!!!! I absolutely LOVED it!!! This is book 2 in the “Chestnut Springs” series and it’s about Cade, Rhett’s brother from “Flawless,” #1, and his romance with Willa, Summer’s, from book 1’s best friend.  I read Heartless for a few readathons  Reading Rivalry - Multiple POV - “ Heartless” is told from both Willa and Cade’s perspectives. Always Fully Booked Reading Challenge - Book set in Canada - I   believe Chestnut Springs is set in the Rockies.   Always Fully Booked “On the Cover” Reading Challenge - A Musical Instrument - A guitar ! Willa, our FMC plays guitar.  Reading the Rainbow challenge - pastel - the background of the  “ Heartless”   cover is pastel blue!  “ Heartless”   had EVERYTHING I love, an FMC who’s stuck in life, a wild, yet sensitive MMC, funny moments, cute scenes, spicy scenes, heartfelt ...

American Royals (#1 American Royals) by Katharine McGee review

Hey ForeverBookers,   I’ve just finished American Royals by Katherine McGee and I LOVED it! If you love scandal and complicated love stories in a contemporary setting, then you will love it as well! Think a royal version of Gossip Girl and you have this book in a nutshell. American Royals follows six characters, all of the new adult age range that come together to create a story of intrigue and romance. There isn’t high action or really a plot outside of the romance which was fine with me as I really enjoy stories just focused on the romance. I appreciated how “American Royals” only focused on the six different characters. There weren’t loads of personalities to get to know, and they all followed the same pattern as they’re all from or have grown up around a certain standing in society. This made the characters easy to follow and understand. It is a character led story, without as I said, much plot.  What there is of a plot of American Royals is taken up with the ascension of ...

The Flat Share by Beth O’Leary Review

Hi foreverBookers,  How are you all today? I hope you’re well! I’ve just finished reading “The Flat Share” by Beth O’Leary and I’m surprised to say that I VERY MUCH enjoyed it!  4 Stars! I only wanted to read “The Flat Share” because of the TV show that’s just come out in the UK! Beth O’Leary books seemed uninteresting to me before. I will probably read more from her in the future now as I enjoyed this one so much! “The Flat Share” had romance and fluff as well as more serious topics though, which was nice to see. Leon, the main male character is black. I don’t think we see many people of colour in books based in the UK or even the States. I can only think of two that I’ve read and reviewed that feature black characters and I’ve reviewed a lot of books! This was nice to see. It’s very much a white dominant industry, I feel. “The Flat Share” tells the story of a young woman, Tiffy who needs a house to live in, when she breaks up with her long term boyfriend, Justin. He’s ve...
