Hey ForeverBookers,
How are you? I hope you’re well!
I’ve just finished “Spellslinger” by Sebastien De Castell and I really enjoyed it!
4.5 stars!
Kellen is the MMC of “Spellslinger.” At the beginning of the book he’s fighting his arch nemesis Tennat to get ready for his mage trials. In this world, you’re only considered worthy of life if you pass your mage’s trials by your 16th birthday. However, Kellen doesn’t have the ability to pull power into himself. Why? You’ll have to read for yourself but I really enjoyed where the plot went. From when he meets the mysterious, Ferius Parfax and gains an unlikely companion the plot picks up. I’m glad to say this was an easy read. There weren’t any tough or complex things to understand.
I read “Spellslinger” for one readathons, which was:
Reading Rivalry - book with a red cover - the cover is red, grey, white and black but I’d say the dominant colour is red!
Theres some bad language in the text of “Spellslinger,” although it’s nothing too bad.
Spoilers below…
“I knelt down and drew a protective circle around myself in the sand. Actually, “ circle” might have been a bit generous.
Tennat chuckled. “Well, now I’m really scared.”
For all his bluster, Tennat wasn’t nearly as imposing a figure as he imagined. True, he was all wiry muscle and meanness, but he wasn’t very big. In fact, he was as thin as I was and half head shorter. Somehow that just made him meaner.”
Kellen and Tennat don’t get along at all. They’re enemies from the start of the book. All Tennat wants to do is beat Kellen to show that he’s better or more superior than him. Does he? I’ll let you read for yourself. This is the main conflict of the book, I feel. This is the push Kellen has to prove that he’s just as good as everyone else.
When Farius Parfax, a wanderer, enters the plot things go from bad to worse for Kellen who now needs to explain why she’s there. Add to this, the appearance of a cat like creature that’s meant to be evil, and you can probably guess the strife that Kellen’s put under. As well as the discoveries he makes about his clan, family and the adversaries they’ve faced in the past, does Kellen even want to be a part of them anymore? Or is he ready to branch out on his own? I’ll let you read for yourself.
“By the ancestors . . . What is that on his face?” my father demanded.
“ it’s just blood,” I said. “ I got hurt, all right? It’s not—“
The forefinger of my father’s right hand gave the slightest twitch. The glow-glass lanterns all around the us flared bright as the sun, banishing every shadow, except one that I couldn’t see.
“No!” my father’s shout split the night in half.”
When it’s proved that Kellen has in fact become a “Shadowblack” an adversary to his own tribe, as his grandmother was before him, what does he do?
Kellen’s sister is someone he’s keen to protect. She’s stronger than him in many ways, in duelling for example. However, Kellen is braver, I’d say.
I surprisingly really enjoyed Spellslinger! There wasn’t a romance at the core to the story, although there might be one in the latter books, I don’t know, but there were a lot of fights/betrayals and there was a lot of comedy and fun too. This made the reading experience really fast and addictive. I got through the book in three days because it was so unputdownable!
I’m going to read a YA thriller next, which I hope is just as addictive! It’s set over the time of 8 hours so we’ll see…
