Hi ForeverBookers,
How are you all? I hope you’re well!
I’ve got a cold but I’ve just finished “People Watching” by Hannah Bonam Young and I bloody well LOVED it!
5 Stars!
“People Watching” tells the story of Milo, a guy that’s moving to help his brother and sister run their family brewery. He pulls up in front of the town’s shop before he gets to his family’s house where there are many children! At Welch’s Gas and Grocer, he meets Mr Welch and his daughter, Prue. He falls for Prue straight away! Like literally straight away. I really enjoyed this story. Yes, it’s instalove to its maximum, I’d say. But I love those sort of stories. The rest of the plot is about Milo and Prue learning to accept one another and Milo helping Prue accept life how it is, through love and sex. Prue’s mother suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. This plays a huge part in the plot. There’s also mention of cancer, although not as big.
I read “People Watching” for a few readathons. They were:
Reading Rivalry -
I enjoyed how People Watching was told in duel POV from both Milo and Prue’s perspectives. I love reading love stories from 1st person POV.
There’s a LOT of spice in “People Watching” so if that’s not for you, maybe don’t pick this up. Also the Alzheimer’s and cancer could be triggering for some.
Spoilers below…
“Seriously, he warns. “From what Sef has told me, the Welches’ daughter seems to be the town’s darling. Do not hurt her.”
Killer suits my mystery girl a lot better than the nickname darling.
“Scout’s honor,” I say, holding up a salute.
He smacking his head into the door frame, laughing. “Please don’t make me regret inviting you here.” - 50
This is Milo’s brother, Nik asking him to play it cool with Prudence. Of course, Milo doesn’t do this! I thought the nickname “killer” was a little weird/intense at first, but Milo keeps using it to refer to Prue so I just got used to it! Nik doesn’t think that Milo is a good fit for Prue, I don’t think. However we don’t see much of Nik or Sef, Nik’s wife, in the plot at all. They’re very much on the sidelines as is Nadia, Milo’s sister. I liked how the plot was focused solely on Milo and Prue and their love story.
“I don’t look like a virgin?” She scoffs, tucking her hand away. “Tell me, Milo, what does a virgin look like exactly?”
Not someone who licks their lips like you did the other day when I knelt beside you. Not someone who practically purred when I brushed my nose against their temple. Not someone who looks at me like I’m their next meal and then coyly, casually tosses me aside. Not . . . you.” - 135
From about the 135 page mark Prue and Milo make a deal. They’ll be each other’s first times, Milo will be Prue’s first lover sexually and Prue will be Milo’s first lover mentally, although she doesn’t learn this until the end of the novel.
Overall, I adored this story! It was sooooo cute and warm and fuzzy but with serious topics at its heart. That’s why I’m giving “People Watching” 5 Stars!
